OUTSTANDING SOCIAL WORKER AWARD (OSWA) 2020

Organised by the Singapore Association of Social Workers and supported by the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) and ExxonMobil Asia Pacific Pte Ltd, the annual Outstanding Social Worker Award (OSWA) is presented by the President of the Republic of Singapore and recognises outstanding contributions by social workers. 

OUTSTANDING SOCIAL WORKER AWARD  (OSWA)

The OSWA is the highest award to social workers conferred by the President of the Republic of Singapore. It aims to recognise the outstanding contributions made by dedicated social workers in Singapore. The award acknowledges their passion and professional contributions to the improvement of the social service and healthcare sectors.

PROMISING SOCIAL WORKER AWARD  (PSWA)

The PSWA (Promising Social Worker Award) was introduced in 2008. It accords recognition to social workers who are newer in the field but have nonetheless made a difference in the lives of their clients as well as the community.

AWARD PRIZES

OSWA winners will receive a certificate, a Personal Development Grant of $10,000 from ExxonMobil and an additional cash grant of $1,000 from MSF. The winner will receive a Professional and Leadership Development Grant worth $30,000 sponsored by MSF.

The PSWA winner will receive a certificate, a Personal Development Grant of $8,000 from ExxonMobil and an additional cash grant of $1,000 from MSF. The winner will receive a Professional and Leadership Development Grant worth $14,000 sponsored by MSF.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria

ELIGIBILITY

​

  • A recognised Bachelor's Degree or Graduate Diploma in Social Work;

  • More than 8 years of post-qualification social work experience for OSWA, and between 3 and 8 years of post-qualification social work experience for PSWA;

  • Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident;

  • Registered Social Worker accredited by the Social Work Accreditation and Advisory Board (SWAAB); and

  • Currently working in the community or healthcare sector, including the management, academic and research domains.

OSWA Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated commendable or outstanding service to his/ her clients and the community, and made valuable contributions to the profession

  • Demonstrated innovative and creative abilities in his/ her work

  • Been actively involved in outreach and advocacy

  • Engage in continual professional development and demonstrated a learning spirit

  • Shown strong leadership qualities

  • Made impactful and lasting contributions to the profession

  • Demonstrated critical thinking and ability to examine issues and ideas

  • Shown to have a macro-micro perspective of trends and issues in the social service sector

PSWA Selection Criteria

  • Achieved significant accomplishments or initiated innovative projects that have impacted clients and community

  • Engaged in continual professional development and demonstrated a learning spirit

  • Shown a strong potential for leadership development through his/ her conduct and work

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

NOMINATIONS

1. Can I nominate someone who is not accredited by the Social Work Accreditation and Advisory Board (SWAAB)? 

 

The nominee must be accredited by the Board to be eligible for the award. 

 

2. Can I nominate a Social Service Practitioner?

 

Yes, provided that the nominee has a recognised Social Work qualification and is accredited as Registered Social Worker (RSW) by the Board. 

​

3. Can I nominate a Social Worker who has 8 years and 1 month of practice experience for PSWA?

​

The PSWA nominee should have 3 to 8 years of experience as a Social Worker at the point of application. Please nominate the Social Worker for OSWA if he/she has more than 8 years of experience as a Social Worker. 

​

4. Can I nominate the Social Worker who handled my case for the OSWA or PSWA? 

​

The nominator should be an existing practising Social Worker or working in the Social Service sector. If you are not a Social Worker, you may approach the Center Head or Head of Social Work Department your Social Worker works at, and get their support on your strong reasons for nomination. 

​

5. Can I nominate a Social Worker who is working in the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) for OSWA/PSWA? 

​

Yes, you can nominate a Registered Social Worker from MSF for the award.

​

However, should he/she be conferred for the award, as a ministry officer, he/she will not be eligible for the Professional and Leadership Development (PLD) Grant sponsored by MSF. He/she will receive the rest of the awards.

​

6. Can I nominate a past PSWA winner for OSWA? 

​

Yes, provided that the past PSWA winner qualifies the criteria set for OSWA.

​

7. Can I submit more than one nomination for OSWA and/or PSWA? 

​

Yes, provided that all the qualifying criteria are met. 

​

8. When is the closing date for nominations? 

​

All nominations must be submitted by Monday, 20 July 2020
